Attitude to Elderly Human Rights and Occupational Awareness of Long-Term Care Givers

Abstract
Purpose: This study is a descriptive study to explore relationship between attitude to elderly human rights and occupational awareness in long-term care givers. The convenience sample consisted of 119 long-term care givers who worked at three long-term care facilities located in one city and one gun. Data were collected using self report questionnaires from October 28 to November 21, 2010.

Methods: Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program.

Results: The average score of sub-region sections including the physical and mental freedom of actions was the lowest of all with a score of 2.04, and they appeared to be pro-human rights. The subject¡¯s degree of professionalism scored the average of 3.07 out of 5 points which is more than half having professionalism. As a result, geriatric care workers taking care of elders can both be defenders of human rights and subjects of human right abuse. In attitude to elderly human rights were relatively pro-human rights. Particularly attitude to right for physical freedom and freedom for privacy were relatively negative. The occupational awareness was also relatively high. Particularly scores for business desired and work satisfaction were high whereas scores for satisfaction to salary and promotion were relatively low.

Conclusion: The attitude to elderly human rights of the long-term care givers is important to guarantee humanistic life of the elderly in long-term care facility. Education on human rights should be included in the curriculum for long-term care givers and should be regularly provided as continuing education.
